Fly fishing the salt can be challenging and rewarding at the same time. No matter how accomplished you are as an inshore fisherman, there is always room for improvement.Redfish, Black Drum, Trout, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, Ladyfish, and Bluefish, or any of the game species in inshore waters can be caught with a flyrod.
The protected waters of Charleston and its surrounding rivers are a nutrient-rich nursery for redfish, spotted sea trout, flounder, and many other inshore species. The most sought after fish on fly would no doubt be the Redfish. Ideal Redfish waters are those that have protected bays, rivers, or estuaries with marine grasses that support the production of a large number of shrimp, crabs, worms, and baitfish. All of these are imitated by the flies that aid in a productive day of fly fishing. Although Redfish are great targets for sight casting, many other inshore species can be taken on fly. We have a year round fishery for the those mentioned earlier, but also have some seasonal species to target on fly such as Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Ladyfish and Jack Crevalle.
Leading up to the catch can be equally heart pounding. Sight fishing for Redfish is the quintessential method of flyfishing for Redfish that maximizes the thrill of catching this prized fish. The three main elements of flyfishing for redfish are; stalking, presentation and catching. As with any sight fishing, seeing the redfish is considerably important for success. Making the proper presentation with your offering is the most difficult hurdle. If all goes well, catching the bull on the flats will give your adrenaline time to return to normal levels before taking your picture.
